Peabody Professor of Music Elliot Forbes '40 will miss the final weeks of his last full term at Harvard, after fracturing his hip yesterday outside Memorial Church.
The 66-year-old scholar fell on the pavement outside the church on his way to morning services.
He was scheduled to undergo surgery this morning at Mt. Auburn Hospital.
Dr. Warren E.C. Wacker, director of University Health Services, said he was also on his way to services at Memorial Church when he discovered Forbes, who was already being assisted by a Harvard policeman.
Forbes's operation would probably involve either stabilizing the hip with a pin or replacing it with an artificial hip, Wacker said. "It's a fairly standard operation," said Dr. James G. Manson, a physician working with Forbes at Mt. Auburn.
Hospital officials said they did not know when Forbes would be able to resume his regular activities, although they estimated that his rehabilitation will probably take several weeks. Forbes's wife Kathleen said the professor plans to teach his spring courses.
Forbes has three lectures left in each of his fall courses. Music 2a. "A Study of Melody and Counterpoint," and Literature and Arts B-51. "The Literature of Voice." He also serves as head tutor of the Music Department.
Music Department Chairman Christoph Wolff said a teaching fellow will deliver the remaining lectures.
Peter W. Urquahart, head teaching fellow for Literature and Arts B-51, said he was especially sorry Forbes would miss the course's last lectures, on 20th century music, because he knows personally many of the composers on the syllabus.
