President Bok, who has spearheaded a move by university administrators to what some control of college sports from the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), will face off in his first Institute of Politics (IOP) forum with the president of the group later this month.
Bok and John Toner will speak on the topic "College Athletics: Sport or Profession," on November 14 along with sociologist Harry Edwards, who organized the Black athlete protest at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
The American Council of Education's committee on athletics, which Bok chairs, recently proposed establishing a special panel of college presidents which would assume some of the power the NCAA now holds over intercollegiate athletics.
Charic M. Daniels '84, organizer of the forum, said earlier this week that the event is not designed as a debate between Bok and Toner, but a chance to learn "what they think the role of college athletics should be at universities."
Bok said yesterday that he decided to speak at his first IOP forum because "It would have seemed odd for the NCAA president to come to Harvard and for me who has been involved in this not to show up.
