Classics Win
The Harvard Classics basketball team opened its season last night with a 78-71 victory over the Harvard junior varsity squad at Briggs Cage. The Classics were led by junior John Williams and senior Dave Thompson, who scored 18 and 14 points respectively.
Harriers Finish 13th In National Championships
The Harvard women's cross country team finished 13th out of 16 teams in the NCAA Division 1 Championship meet at Bethlehem, Pa. yesterday.
The Crimson dropped nine spots from last year's fourth-place finish, the best ever by an Ivy school. Kate Wiley, who earned All-America honors by placing seventh last year, fell to 59th place with a time of 17:52.4 over the 5000-meter course. Jenny Stricker, who also earned All-America honors last year for Harvard, has taken a year off to train for the Olympics.
Kathy Good placed 92nd in 18:36.3, Amy Simon finished 104th in 18:12.5, Leslie Cooper took 111th in 18:54.5 and Grace de-Fries wound up 125th in 19:43.8.
Oregon captured the championship with 95 points, 211 points ahead of Harvard. North Carolina State's Betty Springs took individual honors in a time of 17:52.4.
