Women Harriers Trounce Tigers, Elis

Men Lose Close Race to Princeton, Smash Yale

The Harvard women's cross country team continued its march towards another Ivy championship, trouncing Princeton and Yale in a tri-meet held yesterday at Princeton. The men meanwhile walloped Yale, but lost a close race to powerhouse Princeton.

The women kept their unbeaten record intact, outrunning the Tigers and Elis by a score of 25-41-60. Leading the harriers was Kate Wiley, who set a course record of 16:25.2. In third place was Kathy Good, in 16:44. Lois Brommer finished sixth in 17:12, and was followed by Leslie Cooper in 17:20. Rounding out the scoring for the Crimson was Miriam Keltz (17:32).

The only surprise for the favored Crimson was a performance of Cooper, who ran one of her strongest races of the season.

Next week the team travels to Van Cortland Park in New York City for the biggest meet of the season, the Heptagonals, the race which determines the Ivy championship.

Men Lose Again

For the second meet in a row, the luckless men dropped a close race to a team they were not even supposed to challenge. The harriers lost to Princeton by only 15 points (23-38), and beat Yale by 42.

Harvard was led by Paul Gompers, who finished second to Tiger Gordon Christie, in 24:11. In third place was Harvard's Andy Gerkin, who ran well for the second week in a row. The Crimson's other scorers were co-captain Felix Rippy (24:37) in eighth place and Bruce Weber (24:58) in twelfth. Rippy finished only six seconds behind the fifth, sixth and seventh man, making the race closer than the score appears.

Rippy says the team is hoping Princeton will not run in the Heps next week at the peak which carried them to a course team record yesterday.

Harvard is still optimistic about Friday's big meet. Says Rippy: "We've had bad luck the last two meets. It's about time our luck turns." The harriers feel they are good enough to beat Princeton and Dartmouth, the only two teams to defeat them this season, but they realize it will take a top performance. "Next week will be a test of character," Rippy concludes.
