Andre Dryansky '87 felt the common room in his Canaday Hall suite was a little bare. But instead of buying a used couch or a rug, he decided to stage a play.

On November 19 and 20. Dryansky and a small troupe will present Jean-Paul Sartre's "Huis Clos" in Canaday B-12.

The play focuses on three people with conflicting personalities locked in a room together. The work will be performed in French.

"We are doing the play in French and in our common room as opposed to English and on a normal stage because this will attract more people," explained co-director Randy Weiner '87. "These two facts will also raise exponentially the effect of the play."

The Freshmen in the Arts Program, which is part of the budget of the Freshman Dean's Office, will fund the play. "We have had neither a play conducted in French nor a play in a common room before," said Henry C Moses, dean of freshmen. "The idea is pretty inventive."

Last year, the arts program contributed $2000 to events ranging from dances to Ukranian Easter egg dyeing.

The reaction of the other entry residents has been mixed. "Canaday is an international dorm, but I still think it's a little strange," said Daria Siekhaus '87.

"I think it's pretty funny that they're having a play in this dinky little room, but I'm helping out," Gina Levy '87 said.
