Dartmouth Drowns in Crimson's Wake

Six Aquawomen Top Eastern Qualifying Times

The Harvard women's swim team competed against Eastern qualifying times at Blodgett Pool on Saturday Dartmouth, also at Blodgett, looked on.

Because she anticipated an easy victory over the Big Green (0-3), Harvard Coach Vicki Hays switched around her line up in Saturday's meet.

"Letting swimmers compete in events that they haven't tried this year will give them an opportunity to make the Eastern qualifying times in events in which they have not yet qualified," Hays said.

Her plan worked, as six Harvard swimmers qualified for Easterns in a total of four events.

Individual medleyist Anita Rival led the way with two qualitiers in the 200 freestyle and the 100 IM. Also topping Eastern qualifying times were butterflies Carry Mazzone (200 free). Allison Grers (200 IM). Diane Smith (100 IM). Annie Wilson (100 butterfly), and Shelby Calvert (100 butterfly).

Wilson and Calvert used the 200 butterfly to beat the 1.03.0 time necessary to qualify for the Eastern's 100, which is not a regular season event for the Crimson.

"We had Shelby and Annie sprint the first 100 yards of the 200 butterfly so that they could for the 100 butterfly in the Easterns. Then we asked them to turn around and finish the race," Hays said.

Even with the 100 yard sprint. Wilson and Calvert still managed first and third place finishes in the race.

Continuing a tradition begun by Debbie Zimic in Hanover last season Rival competed unofficially in every event other than the relays and diving. Her times, had they been official, would have transferred 14 Dartmouth points to the Harvard side of the 104.45 final.

Interestingly, if Rival had competed on her own against the 26-member Dartmouth squad, she would have lost only 47-70, despite the fact that Dartmouth would have been guaranteed two of the top three positions, and at least 52 of the possible 117 points available in the individual swimming events.

Rival swam the 2900 yards, the total distance for the 13 individual swimming events, in 32 minutes and 20 seconds, just 15 seconds short of Zimic's record time for the feat. "It's a lot harder psychologically than physically." Rival said, noting that she has swum that far in practice but never had to prepare herself for 13 individual events, one after the other.

THE NOTEBOOK: The Crimson meets Yale on Monday. Hays sees the meet as a battle between Harvard's depth and Yale's few individuals. "Yale has a few really strong sprinters, but we can win if we get them in depth and distance," she said. Harvard beat Yale last season for the first time in seven years.
