Crimson Coach Accuses Elis of Cheating

Tennis

Harvard Coach Don Usher field formal complaints charging that tournament top-seed Connie Yowell used "gamesmanship and stalling" to fend off an upset bid by Crimson second-seed Erika Schulman in the second round of the Ivy League women's tennis tourney yesterday at Yale.

Yowell last night denied Usher's charges "I spent no more time between points than Erika did," she said.

After the first day of competition and Schulman's 7-5, 7-5 setback, Harvard holds third place behind Princeton and the Elis.

According to Usher, Yowell questioned numerous calls and stalled between points in a successful effort to break Schulman's concentration. The Yale star consistently violated a rule limiting the time between points to 30 seconds, Usher said.

"I'm not aware of a 30-second time limit between points," Yowell said.

Usher also charged that Yowell "committed a violation of the rules by talking to a personal coach rather than a university coach" while the match was in progress.

Yowell said her personal coach only handed her a can of water under a fence. "He said absolutely nothing to me," she said "I don't know where Don gets these ideas."

"The best player lost." Usher said. "It was disappointing match in that it wasn't won by tennis ability. Usher filed complaints with the Yale coaches and the tournament officials.

"Their [Yale's] only aim is to win. "Usher said "That is not a philosophy we subscribe to."

Nice Things

In other action, the injuries that threatened to destroy the Crimson campaign actually had little effect. Tracy Kunichika and Deanne Loonin, both suffering from pulled hamstring muscles, teamed up for a victory in the "C" division doubles.

Debbie Kaufman, who aggravated a sore knee in Wednesday's victory over Brown, paired with Crimson Captain Maria Pe to gain today's "B" division doubles semifinals. Harvard top-seed Elizabeth Evans combined with Schulman to earn a berth in the semifinals of the "A" division doubles.

In singles, Evans fell victim to a first-round upset, bowing to Eli Kathy Dalton, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Evans will probably capture the consolation championship today.
