Netwomen Subdue Brown, 6-3; Injuries Threaten Ivy Hopes

The Harvard women's tennis team buried Brown, 6-3, yesterday at Palmer Dixon Courts, but the mortician exacted what may prove a deadly price.

In destroying the Bruins, the Crimson suffered two injuries, making the netwomen literally hamstrung to field a team for this weekend's Ivy tournament. Freshman Deanne Loonin pulled her hamstring muscle while claiming a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Brown's Betsy Epstein Debbie Kaufman won her singles match, but aggravated a sore knee in the process.

Add to this Tracy Kunichika's reinjured hamstring Saturday at Yale, and you have enough injuries to start a hospital, let alone stop a tennis squad. "We have four healthy players," a frustrated Harvard Coach Don Usher said. "We normally enter six singles players and three doubles teams. Now we've got four and one."

The four healthy netwomen displayed superior tennis ability, dispatching their opposition without dropping a set. In fact, the netwomen clinched the victory before Brown claimed a single set. Harvard defaulted two of the three doubles matches because of injury.

Top seed Elizabeth Evans led the way in what she called "probably the best match I've played in a really long time." All of her passing shots fell just inside the line, and her opponent, Carolyn Sugar, was left staring at the spots where the ball landed Evans zipped to a 6-0, 6-1 romp.

At second singles, Erica Schulman nearly rivalled Evans's success, posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Schulman played a confident baseline game, "trying to keep the pressure on" Brown's Durcy Honig.

Captain Maria Pe took slightly more time than Evans or Schulman, but the sophomore earned a convincing 6-3, 6-1 decision.
