Probable Cause Hearing Due For Murder Suspects

A Judge will decide at the end of this month if county officials have enough evidence to seek an indictment against two men charged with the March 4 stabbing murder of a Harvard employee

If the Judge decides that the Middlesex County district attorney's office has compiled enough evidence to show "probable cause," he will transfer the case to a grand jury. Phyllis Broker, the assistant district attorney who is handling the case, said yesterday. The grand jury will hold a hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to indict the suspects, Broker added.

Carl F. Loebig, the editor of Harvard's Arnold Arboretum newsletter and an active member of the Boston arts community, was found stabbed to death by the superintendent at his 84 Prescott St. home, which is a block from the Freshman Union.

Warrants were issued for the arrest of two suspects within 14 hours of the murder, and the first suspect. Kevin D Roach, was arrested the following day in a parking garage near Boston's Combat Zone.

Arthur W. Brown, the second suspect, was arrested three days later in Brockton. Both men are being held without bail.

A police officer who was involved in the arrest described the two suspects as "skid row bums who live on the street."
