Sox Closing in on Tigers

Jim Rice collected four hits, including a three-run homer and a run-scoring double, as the Boston Red Sox completed a four-game series sweep with a 6-1 victory over Detroit Thursday night.

The win moved the Red Sox past the idle Milwaukee Brewers to within one-half game of the division-leading Tigers in the American League East.

Rookie left-hander Bobby Ojeda, called up from the minors just before the start of the season's second half, collected his sixth victory in eight decisions with relief help from veteran Bill Campbell, who earned his sixth save.
