PRINCETON, N.J.--The Princeton University Board of Trustees approved the tenuring of 18 scholars two weeks ago, including 13 promoted from within the university.
Five women and one Black were among the newly tenured professors, raising to 20 the number of female tenured faculty members and increasing the number of Black professors among the 380-member faculty to six.
More women were granted tenure in the past two years than in the past decade, when female professors were first hired at Princeton, but Aaron Lemonick, dean of the faculty, said there has been "no conscious effort" to promote women this year.
Long--standing efforts to appoint qualified women to the faculty caused the high percentage of women promoted this year. President Bowen said.
In other business, the trustees ratified a proposal to create an academic program in women's studies and reaffirmed the university's refusal to divest its holding in Citicorp.
