Members of the Gay Students Association (GSA) unanimously elected on Wednesday their first woman president since the group was formed ten years ago.
Sarah E. Yedinsky '83, who ran unopposed in the election, said yesterday she feels no special pressures as the first female president of the organization, whose membership is approximately two-thirds male.
"I feel no pressure to prove myself as a woman," Yedinsky said, "I feel I can bring a unique perspective to the GSA--it is very important for gay men and lesbians to be able to communicate with each other," she added.
Outgoing GSA president Benjamin H. Schatz '81 said yesterday he thinks Yedinsky's election will "broaden our appeal and attract new members--it will get rid of the common misconception that the GSA is all male."
Patrick J. Flaherty '83, who was elected treasurer Wednesday, said yesterday that having Yedinsky as president will help the GSA "reach out to the feminist community at Harvard and to the Harvard community as a whole."
Yedinsky said she hopes her presence will strengthen ties between the GSA and "other groups of oppressed people and minorities."
