The following exchange between Sen. Robert J. Dole (R-Kan) and Sen. William Proxmire (D-Wise) took place January 21, 1981, at the confirmation hearings of the Secretary of the Treasury, Donald Regan:
Dole: Mr. President, I think his (Regan's) training has been in the financial market. As everybody knows, Mr. Regan demonstrated his effectiveness in building a company which he has headed until the time he has taken this assignment at the request of President Reagan.
He was educated at Harvard University, I think, in the School of Business, and the University of Pennsylvania with an honorary degree in 1972.
Now, attending Harvard is not, in itself, an indication of perfection.
Proxmire: Mr. President, I spent five wasted years in graduate school there.
Dole: In Harvard?
Proxmire: Yes.
Dole: Mr. President, my wife attended Harvard University, so I have so comment.
