Stick Barely Sneak By Yale, 1-0

The Harvard filed hockey team yesterday continued to do what it must do if it is going to reach the Eastern championship Win. The stick women picked up their second straight victory, dumping Yale, 1-0. in New Haven.

The win--the squad's first over the Elis since coach Edie MacAusland took charge of the team three years ago-raised the Crimson record to 5-7-1, 2-3 in the Ivy League.

Harvard go off to a shaky start, as Yale kept the ball near the Crimson net for the first ten minutes of play. At the 17:17 juncture the Crimson got the only tally of the game. Beth Mullen took the ball on a short corner, slaped it toward the Eli goal, and Betsy Torg tipped it in.

Once they scored, the stick women really came alive and took control of the game. Tania Huber played so intensely that she accidently pushed her opponent and was awarded her first warning card of the season. The Eli's main threat, U.S. National team member Janet Colarusso, was contained by Lili Pew's excellent defensive play.

"Colarusso was moved all over the filed. Yale really didn't know what to do with her," MacAusland said.

The second half was much like the end of the first, with Harvard dominating and outhustling the Elis. Captain Maureen Finn maneuvered the ball through the midfield to put Harvard on the attack while Kate Martin's crisp passing kept it there.

"The last two minutes of a game have been tough for the team all season," said MacAusland. The final 120 seconds of this contest were an exception, as the Crimson kept the Elis away from its twines. The time dragged, though, as a time-out was called when forward Ellen O'Neil suffered a bloody nose.

"We played the way we've been playing all season, but today we played with her winning edge," summed up MacAusland.
