Enjoying the sunshine and a good run, approximately 200 students participated yesterday in the first Intramural Cross-Country meet yesterday afternoon.
Winthrop House dominated the 1.7 miles race at Soldiers Field, led by Rodney Pearson, Joan Corsiglia and Leslie Voit.
Pearson, a tutor in the house, came in first for the men with a time of 7 minutes, 3 seconds, while Corsiglia, had the women's winning time of 9:40, with Voit on her heels.
Goaded by its victory last year of the Winter Track Meet Winthrop sent 20 men and 10 women to yesterday's competition.
"It also doesn't hurt to have Rodney," Voit, who is the house's athletic secretary, said.
Pearson is a member of the Greater Boston Track Club, placed 84th in last year's Boston Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 21 min., 40 seconds and runs approximately 90 to 100 miles per week.
In second place for the men yesterday was Crag Harms, of Currier House, followed closely by Kirkland's Dan O'Brien.
Although not as numerous, but equally as enthusiastic as their upperclass counterparts, the freshmen held their own meet earlier in the afternoon.
Greg Welch, representing Thayer South, led the men with an impressive 7:30, followed by Stephen Ezeji-Okoye of Holworthy, and Hasan Kayali, and proctor in Holworthy.
For the women Yardlings, Debbie White took first place for Holworthy with a time of 11.11.
The Cross Country run is the first in series of "Special Events" scheduled in the Intramural calendar.
Competing houses received a maximum of 20 participation points and additional points for placement towards the intramural Strauss Cup competition.
In the early stages of the intramural season, the overall leaders are Currier, Kirkland and Eliot, David Durham, athletic secretary for Eliot, said.
