The women's volleyball team, showing great depth and stamina, travelled to Tufts and Northeastern last Saturday for back-to-back tournaments in which they won four out of five matches.
In nine hours of play--and with just two and a halfhours of rest time--the Crimson raised its record to 6-3 with victories over the Eastern Nazarene and Brown in the Northeastern Invitational and over Tufts and Bentley in the Tufts tri-meet.
Senior co-captain Valerie Romero said after the events that the team's depth and enthusiasm were the keys to success. "This is a young team but very balanced--most of us are playing our first year of varsity and we are all very excited about it," she added.
The team consists of three seniors, one junior, four sophomores, and six freshmen.
First year coach Karen Altaman's spikers got off to a shaky start against Eastern Nazarene, splitting the first two games 15-5, 2-15, and trailing in the third 13-9, before they reeled off six straight points to win the match.
Altaman's 5-1 offense, centering around junior setter Margaret Chang, led the Crimson past Brown in the quarterfinals 15-7 and 15-9, but unforced errors--particularly missed serves--enabled Northeastern to beat Harvard in the semifinals 15-6, 13-15, and 15-10.
The squad immediately left for Medford, where they outclassed Bentley 15-10, 15-4, and squeaked by Tufts 15-7, 12-15, 15-8.
