Leslie G. Poole '83 Dies In California Car Accident

Memorial services will be held September 25 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Church for Leslie G. Poole '83, who died last month of injuries suffered in a car accident. She was 19 years old.

Poole was driving alone shortly after midnight August 24 when her car failed to turn and hit a tree in her hometown of Portola Valley, Calif. She died three days later.

"If there was ever a girl who had everything going for her, it was Leslie," Miki L. Kagan '83, one of Poole's roommates in Weld Hall last year, said last week. Mary L. Thompson '83, another roommate, added, "Leslie didn't waste a minute."

Soccer Halfback

Poole tutored disadvantaged children through Phillips Brooks House and was a halfback on the junior varsity soccer team. She had been asked to join the varsity squad this year.

"I was really looking forward to having her with us," soccer coach Robert A. Scalise said yesterday, adding that Poole's teammates thought highly of her.

A 1979 graduate of Woodside High School in California, Poole was vice president of the student body, a peer counselor, winner of a writing award from the National Council of English Teachers and queen of her senior prom.

Peter I. Ohtaki '83, a friend from high school, said yesterday Poole was "incredibly warm and totally outgoing, rowdy, bubbly and whatever superlatives you can think of."

A prospective Government concentrator, Poole was assigned to Quincy House. "She was planning to come up early this year," Ohtaki said, adding, "She was so psyched for school, especially the soccer."

Many of Poole's friends agreed with Kagan that, "She made my freshman year enjoyable and bearable--she enjoyed life to its fullest."
