Early Saturday morning 30 fun loving Ruggers and undisclosed quantities of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer will pile into two thrity-foot-long Winnebagos and two automobiles. The Harvard Rugby Club is embarking on its "1980 Dreadnought Rugby Tour" to Florida next week.
The team, undefeated in New England collegiate competition last fall, will spend 11 days playing its way to and through Florida. The trip will culminate in a two-day tournament in Fort Lauderdale benefiting the Easter Seal Foundation.
Seriously
Co-captain Keith (Red) Oberg said recently the purpose of the trip is to "get the team together and start the season off right," adding that "We're hoping to do well, but we're really going to get in shape and have fun."
The team's schedule is well-balanced, including equal numbers of games with college teams, games with club teams, and receptions at Harvard Clubs.
The rugby team will play its first game Sunday afternoon. March 23, against the University of Virginia. After the game they will meet for food and drink supplied at the Harvard Club of Charlottesville.
On Tuesday, the Crimson ruggers will continue south to match skills with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After singing many unprintable songs and imbibing many alcoholic beverages, the Rugby team plans to reach Florida to spend several days of R and R under the Florida sun.
Organizing the adventure are President Malcolm (Kip) McKenzie and co-captains David (Dardevil) Miller and Oberg, all seniors. James R. Tovey, unable to participate due to a fall injury, will be on hand as "quasi coach and spiritual leader of the team," Oberg said.
The major event of the tour is an Easter Seal tournament involving a number of club teams and receptions at the Harvard Club of Fort Lauderdale.
The Rugby team is looking for outstanding performances from (Easy) Edward Tompkins and Rodney (Stick) Walters.
