ERG Recommendation

News Shorts

Undergraduates should be able to take two of their 10-required Core Curriculum half-courses on a pass/fail basis, the Educational Resources Group (ERG) recommended yesterday.

ERG, which consists of two student representatives from each upperclass House, drafted a letter to the Standing Committee on the Core requesting the pass-fail option "in order to encourage students to take courses that are perceived as especially difficult or that are in fields where students have no experience."

The Standing Committee is scheduled to consider the issue next week. A preliminary poll taken by the committee this month showed that most of the Faculty members on the five Core sub-committees oppose the pass/fail option.

Robert P. Storch '82, co-chairman of ERG, said yesterday a pass/fail option "would actually make the Core more effective by allowing students to experiment without risking undesirable grades."
