Cambridge city councillors voted five times yesterday without choosing a mayor for the city.
East Cambridge veteran political leader Alfred E. Vellucci seemed the most likely compromise candidate to emerge when balloting resumes at next Monday's meeting.
Other conservatives and independent candidates were unable to muster more than two votes on any of the ballots, and the four council liberals voted for Francis Duehay on the first ballot.
Council members said yesterday it was unlikely the liberals would find another vote for Duehay. "Now it's a question of what commitments we can get from Vellucci, one of the liberal councillors said yesterday.
