An unexpected 24-18 win over Coast Guard and cooly executed 30-12 and 34-10 thrashings of weak Lowell and MIT squads at an MIT-hosted quad meet Saturday gave the still undefeated Crimson matmen three big victories and a 9-0-1 record.

Paul Widerman, the 118-lb. Crimson standout, started the ball rolling against Coast Guard with an 8-2 decision over Matt Thomas. Hot off a seventh place finish in the Midlands Tournament, Widerman cruised to his fourth straight win over Thomas, who looked like he didn't belong in the same league.

At the 126-1b. slot, freshman Andy McNerney notched his third pin of the season when he nailed Chris Sinnot with just two seconds remaining on the clock. The match was close most of the way with McNerney trying out a new tilt move several times before icing the Coast Guard grappler with his cradle roll.

Fritz Campbell, another promising freshman, displayed his skill and strength in the 134-lb. bout with an easy pin over Doug Taylor. Campbell toyed with Taylor through the first round and then dropped him easily at 2:32.

Cool Customer

Mark Cooley warmed up with a 9-7 win against Coast Guard's Bob Getchel, and then returned to pummel Lowell's Chuck Kolodgey, 13-5. The Crimson's 190-pounder continued to rely on his strength and endurance to power him past the opposition.

In the roughest match of the afternoon, Harvard's Howard Verlin held on to down Lowell's Jim Gore. Taller and broader than most 118-pounders, Gore gave away two penalty points and a bloody mouth to scrappy Veroin. A tricky Peterson side roll and two reversals paved the way to a 9-5 win for the Crimson wrestler.

"It was a very physical match, but I was pleased with the way I wrestled," Verlin said yesterday.

Double Take

The Baer twins turned in strong showings with three victories between them. David, the heavier of the two at 158 Ibs., snagged his first win of the afternoon with a 21-3 slaughter of Lowell's Rich McLarney. He then added a 4-3 squeaker over Steve Leibiger of MIT. Brian Baer, at 142 lbs., shut out Engineer Tony Wilson, 11-0.

Rick Kief notched the quickest pin of the afternoon when he shot a double leg take down against Lowell's 142-lb. Chris Bradford. Fighting hard, Bradford lost it all moments later when Kief switched to a headlock at 1:50 into the match.
