DETROIT--The United Auto Workers (UAW) and General Motors Corporation yesterday night began a marathon bargaining session on a new company proposal. Contracts for the union workers expire at 11:59 tonight.
UAW President Douglas A. Fraser said yesterday it was possible the negotiators could take a break for sleep "if the momentum isn't there."
Fraser said he had spent "a lot of hours" with the General Motors chief negotiator recently, but he did not disclose the subjects of their talks.
The major issues in the contract renewal talks are protection of retired workers against inflation, more paid time off, and wages. A union source said yesterday he expected the company to offer a "total package" tying together the three main issues.
