University Citizens Against Nukes (UCAN), a group of Harvard employees, will show the NBC documentary "Danger: Radioactive Waste" on Wednesday, July 25, at the Phillips Brooks House, as part of a series of educational events and recruitment efforts.
UCAN is also planning to sponsor an alternative energy fair, rally, and concert in cooperation with student anti-nuclear groups this fall, Dottie Lewis, business manager for the Psychology and Social Relations Department and one of the organizers of the group, said yesterday.
"Employees don't usually make a stand for anything, but we are stable, we're here all the time, and we want to make a statement, too," Lynda Snook, a worker in the Psychology and Social Relations Department business office and UCAN member, said yesterday.
"We can provide a continuity to the argument here at Harvard, since we remain although students leave," Snook said. The group intends to investigate Harvard's involvement in the nuclear industry, and possibilities for alternative energy source use throughout the University, Snook added.
Carol Lewis, UCAN worker and budget coordinator at Buildings and Grounds, said yesterday that the group's primary efforts are now directed at educating people about the dangers and problems of nuclear energy generation by leafletting, letter-writing, and weekly noon-time educational seminars.
UCAN's long-term goals include an immediate end to nuclear power plant construction, a gradual reduction in the number of operating plants, the development of an energy program based on renewable energy sources and conservation techniques and the creation of an active program of United States pressure in other nuclear-competent countries to achieve the above goals.
Formed by a small group of employees after the Three Mile Island accident in April, UCAN has expanded to include students and faculty, and may effect a merger with the Clamshell Alliance, a national antinuclear coalition, this fall, Wattie Taylor, a planning officer for the University and active UCAN member, said yesterday.
