The baseball and lacrosse teams named their captains for next year at close-out cookouts this weekend. The batsmen selected junior outfielders Charlie Santos-Buch and Mike Stenhouse, while the lax squad chose junior Peter Predun (a third-team All-American last year) and Dave Wigglesworth.

Slugging first baseman Mark Bingham (.403, 36 RBIs) won the diamond squad's vote for most valuable player, while senior midfielder Gordie Nelson picked up the stickmen's MVP vote.

Other lacrosse award winners were Norm Forbush (most improved), Bill Forbush (unsung hero), Wigglesworth (most hustle), co-captain Jamie Egasti (spirit and leadership), Mike Faught (high scorer), and Ken First (biggest contribution to program). The speedy First won last week's "March of Dimes" race as well.

Four members of the Crimson lacrosse squad also played in the New England All-Star game yesterday, taking the field for the East squad, which lost 20-17. Faught played attack, Egasti and Nelson midfield, and First goalie--where he yielded just one goal in the quarter he played. Harvard coach Bob Scalise rotated three other goalies in the other three quarters.

Other Action

In other weekend action, a joint Crimson-Nieman Fellows squad once again proved the superiority of the press over the academic community by trouncing the Sociology Department, 23-2.

Jeff Toobin and John Bruce both cracked four hits for the journalists, but Nieman fellow Frank Van Riper (N.Y. Daily News) was the big gun with a pair of towering triples.

The scribes' mound-man Steve Herzenberg twirled masterful two-hit ball, but lost his shutout bid when short-fielder Bob Boorstin committed three embarrassing errors to let in a pair of unearned runs in the seventh.

The victory gave the Crimson its 105th consecutive undefeated season.
