Swim Team Names Beckman, Fayer Captains

The Harvard women's swimming team named veteran juniors Sharon Beckman and Jane Fayer captains for the 1979-80 season Monday night at the team's annual awards dinner.

Fayer, a free style specialist, did not swim this season because of a separated shoulder. "It's great, but I feel strange because I didn't swim in a meet this year," she said yesterday.

Co-captain Beckman, a butterfly swimmer, said yesterday she was surprised at her selection.

Aquawomen team coach Stephanie Walsh said yesterday she was pleased with the selections. "They're both leaders and will do a good job combining the incoming new talent with the present members of the team," she said.

Fayer participated in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, representing Puerto Rico. She also received small college All-American honors for her performances on the 200, 400, and 800-yd. freestyle relay teams at last year's small college national championships at Gainsville, Ga. She currently holds the University record for the women's 50-yd. free.

Although Beckman is a middle distance swimmer during the season, her specialty is in long events. One publication recently ranked her first nationally in the marathon.

"Swimming is a lot of fun. We're the only fourth place team in the Ivies to come back screaming from the trip. I'm concerned for the personal satisfaction of my teammates," Beckman said.
