Crimson Aquamen Whip Yale

It was business as usual for the Harvard men's swimming team Saturday as the Crimson machine underwent its final tuneup for next weekend's Eastern Championships. The 66.5-46.5 victory over Yale at Blodgett Pool marked the completion of Harvard's second consecutive undefeated dual meet season.

Swimming victories over the Elis have not always been achieved so easily. Yale has won 38 of the 47 contests between the two teams held since 1931, but the Crimson has now captured six of the last seven.

Harvard controlled the meet throughout, winning the first six events and piling up a 42-10 lead (after the one-meter diving) before switching on the cruise control and allowing Yale to win three of the final four events to make the score look respectable.

Crimson star Bobby Hackett made only one appearance in the meet; but his 9:00.17 pool-record-breaking performance in the 1000-yd. freestyle ranks as the second fastest time ever recorded in the event.

This was Hackett's first serious attempt since early-season to break the nine-minute barrier (he went 9:05 in December), and the sophomore admitted afterwards to being "slightly disappointed."

"When I saw that I was out in 4:27 (for the first 500), I thought I had it," the former Olympian said yesterday. "I eased off a little too much on the seventh and eighth one-hundreds. It's disappointing to miss it by so little, but it was still my best time."

Seniors Jamie Greacen and Malcolm Cooper both capped their dual meet careers with double victories. Greacen captured both diving events while Cooper crushed the field in the 100-yd. freestyle (46.81) and contributed a leg on the winning medley relay team.

"He's diving at least as well as he ever has right now," diving coach John Walker said of Greacen yesterday. "We're really gonna miss him next year."

For Greacen, it was the first time this year that he had qualified for the NCAA meet on both boards in the same meet; however, he had previously met the qualifying standards several times in each event.

Freshman Ron Raikula and Tim Maximoff each set pool records Saturday, and each established himself as the man to beat in their respective events (the 200 backstroke and the 400 Individual Medley) at the Easterns. Raikula's 1:52.69 and Maximoff's 4:06.48 both rank among this year's national best times.

CRIMSON SPLASHES: Dan Kiley and Kent Ashwood practically insured themselves spaces on the 18-man Easterns roster with their performances Saturday.
