The first Class Marshal elections will be postponed until after Thanksgiving, Victor A. Koivumaki III '68, associate for classes and reunions, announced in a letter to all candidates today.
The first round of elections were originally scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, November 12 and 13, but were postponed because of "legitimate concerns about the election" brought by a number of candidates to President Horner, Koivumaki said yesterday.
On Wednesday Rose C. Palermo '80, a candidate for Radcliffe Class Marshal, spoke with Horner about changing the present election procedure, which allows only men to vote for men and only women to vote for women.
"For four years we go through a coed experience here. To have separate Class Marshal elections for men and women just seems inconsistent. I would like to see men being able to vote for women and vice versa." Palermo said yesterday.
"I consider myself to be not just a Radcliffe student, but a Harvard-Radcliffe student. I would like to represent both Harvard and Radcliffe," Palermo added.
Horner will consider the changes suggested by Palermo and will discuss them with other Radcliffe students. Koivumaki said.
Horner was out of town yesterday and could not be reached for comment.
Nicole I. Sinek '80, another candidate for Radcliffe Class Marshal, has "mixed feelings" about the suggested joint election "because, even though Radcliffe Marshals do have additional jobs vis a vis Radcliffe that Harvard Marshals do not have, our class was admitted as a whole and not split into two colleges," Sinek said.
