What team has the only undefeated record at Harvard this season, has shut out Yale and is forced to play on a parking lot? It could only be the Harvard rugby team.
The Crimson rolled over the Elis, 18-0, Saturday to round out its first perfect season in 165 years of competition with nine wins. The shutout was its fifth during a campaign in which it outscored its opponents, 180-25.
Team captain Keith Oberg, who played with ten stitches in his leg, said yesterday. "We combined the talent and the enthusiasm of the team to reach our potential. There was an unbelievably good spirit and that's why we won this year," he added.
Human Scrum
The crowd of 200 watched a slow first half in which Harvard managed only four points on a try by Gary Mar. The Crimson scrum over-powered its opponents, driving over the goal line and allowing the scrum-half to touch the ball down.
Peter Hilton, the fly half, started off the second period by scoring a try on a 40-yd. run. Hilton faked a "scissors" play (a reverse in football lingo) to gain the necessary opening. Charlie Bott drove the convert home.
Inaugural
Kip Mackenzie, a winger who has been elected next year's president, scored on a 15-yd. run. Bott finished off the scoring when he intercepted a pass and galloped for a 60-yd. try.
Winter Kills
The team is looking ahead to another undefeated year when it resumes play in the spring with the Ivy League and Beanpot Tourney. The ruggers will also travel to Ireland in March, and to New Orleans for the Tulane tournament during Mardi Gras.
Andy Casper, the team's social chairman, said, "This season was a big push. We were very determined and worked hard. We just want to do the same thing next spring to go undefeated on the whole year."
