"If the meek shall inherit the earth, what the hell is gonna happen to all us tigers," reads the caption under the picture of a puzzled feline that Pappy Hunt, women's cross country coach, presented to sophomore Martha Clabby at last night's end-of-season banquet.

The celebration dinner marked the end of a frustrating but winning season, hampered by untimely injuries.

Last night the squad elected Junior jaunter Johanna Forman leader of the pack for next year's season. Forman, who finished first or second for the Crimson every time she ran this season, will replace Karla Amble, captain of the 1979 team.

Freshman pacer Darlene Beckford captured last night's other honor, as Hunt presented her with the "Outstanding Performer Award."

The season isn't quite over, though, for Beckford. She travels to Florida State Saturday to try to add All-American to her list of accolades that include All-Ivy and All-Eastern.

"Beckford is ready and determined. She's shooting for the top ten in the Nationals, but I wouldn't be surprised if she sneaks in among the top five," Hunt said of Beckford last night.

"Beating UMass who ended up taking the New Englands was a high point, and so was winning the GBC's (Greater Boston Championships). The Ivies, boy, there the team really pulled together and finished on a high note," Hunt added.

Next season looks promising--the squad will only lose three runners to graduation: Diane Jacobson, Kat Taylor, and Amble.

Sophomore Paula Newnham--injured most of this season--will take next semester off to train for the Olympic trials in England, her native country. She will return to compete for the Crimson harriers next fall.
