Downpour Causes Floods in Buildings

Wednesday afternoon's heavy rains caused flooding in more than 20 buildings at Harvard, Buildings and Grounds (B&G) officials said yesterday.

The National Weather Service reported that nearly 1.2 inches of rain fell on the Boston area between 5 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Hilles Library sustained the worst damage after about an inch of water covered the bottom floor, David A. Jones, B&G superintendant of the north area, said yesterday. He added that the B&G will have to remove and dry the carpet on that floor despite cleanup efforts of B&G plumbers, Quad House janitors and student volunteers.

Rain also flooded Memorial Hall, but the building suffered no damage.
