Police Investigating Wallets Discovered Wednesday In Lowell House Basement

Harvard police are investigating the possibility that 19 wallets, found Wednesday in Lowell House, were stolen by a Harvard affiliate.

The wallets, some of which may belong to 1979 graduates, were discovered near the men's restroom on the lower level of the dining hall.

Police are trying to locate the owners of the wallets and to learn whether each was reported stolen.

Saul L. Chafin, chief of the University Police, said detectives assigned to the case are expected to complete their investigation today.

No cash was found in the wallets, but other items--credit cards, identification and personal checks--were not taken.

Chafin said leaving those items in wallets was not the usual pattern of the street criminal, adding that fact suggests they were taken by a Harvard affiliate.

Chafin said he suspects the wallets were taken during meals from the dorm's cubicle storage areas.
