Laxmen Choose Egasti, First

The men's lacrosse team performed the final act of its outstanding 1978 season Saturday, tabbing juniors Jamie Egasti and Ken First as next season's co-captains at their close-out barbecue.

First performed solidly in the cage all season, saving his best performance before his hometown crowd during the Crimson's 17-4 rout over Penn at Franklin Field. Egasti, a midfielder, established himself as king of the trenches this season by dominating faceoff action. He also turned in 11 goals and five assists.

The laxmen also selected senior attackman Steve Martin, the Ivy League scoring champion, as the winner of the Class of '59 Most Valuable Player award. "Marty" contributed 29 goals and 46 assists this season to raise his career point total to 167, second on the all-time Harvard list.

This year's co-captains, Bobby Mellen and Hank Leopold, split a pair of other awards presented Saturday. Leopold copped the trophy for the player who contributed the most to Harvard lacrosse, while Mellen won the "best hustle" prize.

In other presentations, attack Dave Wigglesworth picked up the Herman Hammerman "Unsung Hero" award, while husky crease ace Mac DeCamp was named the most improved player.
