The hills of Hanover were alive Saturday afternoon with the sound of ricocheting titleists pealing through the woods of the Hanover Country Club. The Crimson linksters sang their swan song against Dartmouth for the third time this year.
The Big Green gave a bravura performance on their bric-a-brac home course with a team aggregate of 384 strokes, 15 ahead of Harvard. Dartmouth won the Ivy League championship a week before Saturday's match and also coasted past the Crimson in the ECAC qualifying tournament in the fall.
Dartmouth's golfing virtuoso is junior Joe Henley, who larked to a winning round of 74, abetted by local knowledge of the tricky layout. Henley was runner-up in the Ivy tournament.
Tied for second place were Harvard's Glenn Alexander, the possessor of one of the prettiest one-piece swings in New England, and the Big Green's Jack Kiernan. Alexander's brother Larry, who plays for Dartmouth, shot an 80 although he needed a nine on one hole.
Following Alexander for the linksmen were Captain Alex Vik. who carded a 78, and Jim Dales, who came in at 80 despite his whiskey-jerk putting touch on the greens. Spence Fitzgibbons logged a lackluster 11-over 81.
Ron Himelman and George Arnold both shot 84. Arnold shot a 36 for the front nine but took a celestial 48 blows after the clubhouse turn. Peter Smith did not do himself proud in shooting an unimpressive 94.
D'Artagnan
Alexander played the role of the Crimson's D'Artagnan of the links, brandishing rapier-sharp irons after not having played all of last week because of hourlies. He was two-under par after seven holes when he impaled sand wedge shots on the flagstick for birdies on the third and sixth holes. He finished even for the front nine when he took three-putt bogeys on number eight and nine.
Shooting Wide
Alexander then lost five strokes to par when he hit gutter balls on the bowling lane-wide fairways of the 12th and 13th holes. He brushed his tee shot on the par-three 12th into the woods for a double bogey. A lost ball on 13 cost him a triple-bogey.
Alexander hit his drive on the dogleg par-five 18th in A-one position and then burnished a two-iron 30 feet from the pin. He rolled in the putt on the broadloom green for his three and a 76 for the day.
