Latin buffs will love the slogan that won the Radcliffe T-shirt competition: "Collegium Feminamque Cano," translated as "Of the college and the woman I sing."
The slogan will appear on T-shirts marking Radcliffe's 100th anniversary. It is a paraphrase of the opening words of Virgil's "Aeneid," "Of arms and the man I sing."
Eric Miller '79, Janet Masur '78 and Cheryl Claassen, a third-year graduate student, who submitted the slogan jointly, will receive a $100 prize. The judges also awarded five runner-up prizes of $25.
Dolly N. Cannon '46, chairman of a committee to organize activities in celebration of Radcliffe's centennial, announced the decision yesterday in a presentation ceremony at Agassiz House.
Among the runners-up are James M. Bogin '79 for "Radcliffe: 100 Years of the Agassiz and the Ecstasy," and Lucy Wood '79 for "The Radcliffe Woman: Not Just Another Harvard Man."
Thirty-nine women and 25 men submitted over 150 entries. Some, President Horner said at the presentation, were "a might harsh on Harvard" ("Radcliffe: A Hundred Years of Eluding Harvard"); others, she said, were "earthy" ("Keeping a Breast With Education--Radcliffe").
Horner said the winning slogan carries a "message with dignity." "I think it's a little obscure but it's cute," Susan Comstock '78, president of the Radcliffe Union of Students, said yesterday. "It's not very inspiring," she added.
