The Harvard Sailing team launched its spring season over the weekend with a victory worthy of champagne-bottle smashing, as it cruised past a 15-boat fleet to win the "A" and "B" divisions of the Admiral Moore Trophy on the choppy waters of Long Island Sound.
Senior co-captain Jim Hammitt lowered the boom on the "A" competition by steering his sloop to a first-place finish on the Moore Trophy course, which ran from one side of the Throgs Neck Bridge to the other. Laura Brown, the captain of Harvard's women's team, crewed for Hammitt.
The Crimson's other co-captain, senior Russell Long, skippered the "B" boat to victory, aided by the crewing of Kitt Lilly.
The sparkling performance buoyed Crimson hopes for a successful spring season. The sailors currently hold a number-seven national ranking, and the Moore performance should move them a few notches closer to number-one Yale.
