Although the score was 72-59 in favor of Yale when the Crimson women's swim team threw in the towel at Saturday's meet, sterling performances by several aquawomen set five new records in a surprisingly good showing against the Ivy champions in blue.
"We broke nine records in the Ivy League Championship two weeks ago," coach Stephanie Walsh said yesterday. "I didn't expect the team to break any more until the Nationals in two weeks."
Despite Walsh's expectations, strong freestyle and relay performances did pick up points for the team, and drowned some old records.
Swimming off with first place in four events, freshman Liz Kelly set a new record for the 500-yd. freestyle at 5:08.40, and upped the record for the 200-yd, freestyle to 1:57.76.
Judy Carpentier made a huge splash in the 50-yd. butterfly. Her time of 0:28.97 broke the record set in 1972.
In the 100-yd. freestyle, sophomore Jane Fayer streaked through the waves to capture a new record of 55.76.
With Lauris Downey, Dianan Broden, Judy Carpentier and Sherry Lubbers pooling their efforts in thg 200-yd. medley relay, their time of 158.49 passed the previous record by three seconds.
"Now, if we could get a few more starters in the butterfly and breast strokes next year, we should really do well," Walsh said.
