RUS Advises Full Divestiture, Will Petition Horner, Lyman

The Radcliffe Union of Students (RUS) last night voted unanimously to support total divestiture of all Harvard and Radcliffe stock in corporations and banks involved in South Africa, Heather A. Pavlik '79, chairman of the committee on Radcliffe administration of RUS, said yesterday.

Debra L. Cohn '81, a member of the Radcliffe divestiture subcommittee of the South African Solidarity Committee (SASC), said yesterday "RUS's endorsement is part of a movement to get as many women's organizations as possible to support divestiture of Radcliffe and Harvard."

"If a few more organizations accept our resolution, the Radcliffe Board of Trustees will be made aware that we are not just a small group of students looking for a cause, but that we feel strongly that total divestiture is the only answer," Pavlik said.

RUS will also send a letter to President Horner and Susan Lyman, chairman of the Radcliffe Board of Trustees, asking that students be allowed to democratically elect representatives to Radcliffe's shareholder's advisory committee, which Horner is in the process of organizing.

"The letters that will be presented by SASC to the Radcliffe Board of Trustees will have some impact, but the battle to win divestiture will require a constant working relationship with the Board and the advisory committee," Pavlik said.
