The Harvard women's squash team will go home for Christmas with an unblemished record after squeaking by Brown Saturday, 4-3, for their fourth victory of the season.
Although the top three racquetwomen fell to their opponents, steller performances by Eleanor Cunningham, captain Jenny Stone,k Margo McGlade and Courtney Stimpson carried the squad past Brown in its first crucial match of the year.
Numbers one and two Becky Tung and Cynthia Stanton both lost 3-0 to polished Brown adversaries. Nell Foreman absorbed a narrow 3-2 defeat after holding a 2-1 lead.
But the racquetwomen's superior depth shone through and allowed the squad to pull off the important win. Cunningham topped her opponent 3-1, while Stone, McGlade and Stimpson swept to 3-0 victories.
With the match knotted at three-all, freshman Stimpson displayed consistency and finesse in clinching the victory.
The Best
"This is the best I've played all year. I'm glad we won, too, because we've been preparing for this for awhile," Stimpson said following her fine showing.
The Brown team used aggressive tactics against the racquetwomen, crowding on virtually every shot. But Stimpson and her cohorts counteracted the strategy by calling appropriate lets and refusing to surrender good position on the court.
The team's poise under pressure pleased coach Paul Moses, who said the team has greatly improved since its sluggish wins over Tufts, Bowdoin and Wesleyan earlier this season.
