The Leverett and Kirkland football teams will fight it out for the House championship tomorrow, after both posted wins in yesterday's opening round of the playoffs.

K-House easily disposed of Winthrop, 16-0, while Leverett squeaked out a 7-6 victory over South House in a pair of games played behind the stadium.

Leverett's hard-hitting defense put them on top even though South House gained more offensive yards.

The game-winning touchdown came after Leverett House downed a punt on the opposition's 2-yd, line and then recovered a fumble on the 3-yd. line the next play. Three downs later, Leverett player-coach Bill Lewis drove into the endzone on a handoff from quarterback Bob Holz to put the Bunnies on the scoreboard.

South House also converted a turnover into a touchdown, recovering the ball on their own 30-yd. line in the final quarter, moving it down the field on passes by shotgun quarterback John Nadeau, and scoring on a quarterback sweep to the left.

Not willing to settle for a tie, the Quad gridders went for a two-point conversion as Nadeau swept right only to be stopped short of the endzone.

Leverett House's record now stands at 3-1, their only loss coming against Kirkland House. "We were glad to win because now we have a chance to redeem ourselves and beat K-House in the championship," Lewis said yesterday.

K-House's defense preserved its untarnished record, shutting out the opposition for the fourth straight game.

Kirkland scored in the first quarter when fullback Brad Lown took in a 5-yd. scamper to cap a 65-yd. drive.

In the last play of the half, Jamie Egasti kicked a 35-yd. field goal and to put the icing on the cake, quarterback Casey Fitts bootlegged for 20 yards to end the scoring.
