Joel Sets Pair of Records As Swimmers Win, 86-43

The varsity women's swim team, led by freshman Adele Joel's record-breaking debut performance, started its season in convincing fashion last night by dunking Clark, 86-43.

A strong showing all around, especially among first-year performers, gave the Crimson ten wins in 15 events.

"We have more depth this year than we've ever had before. Some of the kids did really good times," head coach Stephanie Walsh said after the sparsely-attended meet.

Clark, one of the Crimson's weaker opponents, made an excellent season opener because "some of our kids are a little lackadaisical--we need to get a little tougher-minded," Walsh added.

Joel started off her evening by swimming the 100-yd. breaststroke in a team-record time of 1:03:51 to break her own week-old mark by one one-hundredth of a second. She then topped teammate Maura Costin's old team record of 2:44 in the 200-yd. individual medley by 11.19 seconds, and finished with a close win in the 200-yd. breaststroke.

"Adele did very well, but there's still room for improvement. She did come pretty close to her best tonight, though," Walsh said.

Co-captain Costin, a junior, didn't do badly herself as she posted wins in the 100-and 200-yard freestyles (leading 1-2-3 Crimson finishes both times), and ended up second in the 100-yd. butterfly.

Freshman Pamela Stone swept the diving competition with few problems, while yardlings Julia McAree and Elizabeth Adams took first-place finishes in the 200-yd. butterfly and 500-yd. freestyle races respectively.

The team of Jane Fayer, who has been hampered by shoulder problems, Laura Orgel, Belinda Williams and Susan Vivian contributed a victory in the meet's opening event, the 400-yd. medley relay, and Harvard never looked back.

"Our team looked real good and it'll be looking even better in the future," Joel said.
