The administrative board has postponed the hearings of three students involved in the Halloween dinner food fight in the Kirkland House dining hall until they review the statements of approximately 35 people who signed a petition sharing the blame.
In a letter from Elizabeth A. Gray, Allston Burr Senior Tutor in Kirkland House, students were urged to provide an explanation and description of their own conduct in the incident and were warned that they might be subject to disciplinary action.
Hal B. Ruthizer '80, said yesterday he signed the petition because "I disapproved of the way the University was singling out individuals."
"There was food on the floors, walls, ceilings. It looked as though a garbage masher was placed in the middle of the room and just exploded," Ruthizer added.
The exchange lasted three or four minutes and resulted in the dining hall being closed at 6:45 p.m. Dining hall workers said yesterday that they didn't clean up at all, as the students involved vacuumed and swept the floors, and washed the tables after the fight.
Back to Normal
Although he was not present during the fight, dining hall supervisor Paul J. Denaro said the fight caused no permanent damage, and everything was back to normal when he arrived at work the next morning.
A student who wished to remain unidentified said she signed the petition because, "I threw as much food as the people they are taking before the ad board. It couldn't have happened without everyone else who was there."
Dining hall staffer Helen C. Davidson yesterday recalled the last food fight at Kirkland House two years ago. "Turkey legs were the main course and the dining hall manager stopped it before it got going," she said.
