Tommy John, last year's "medical miracle," threw his first shutout of the year yesterday for the Dodgers as the Philadelphia Phillies continued their "roll over and die" act, succumbing to the Los Angeles Dodgers again at home, 4-0.

Davey Lopes provided the fireworks for the Dogs, driving a fourth-inning homer deep to left field for all the offense John needed. Lopes later singled and tripled for two more RBIs, finishing the game with more total bases than the entire Philadelphia squad. Steve Yeager's one-out single in the fifth scored Dusty Baker from second for Los Angeles' other run.

Reggie Smith's rocket throw from right which held Phillie leadoff hitter Mike Schmidt to a single on a blast off the wall in the first, and Garry Maddox's baserunning blunder in the seventh guaranteed the shutout.

Impotence

But it was John's vaunted sinkerball which produced 18 ground ball outs, including three double plays, that allowed the L. A. outfielders a day of rest. Philadelphia's impotent playoff bats managed only four hits and two outfield putouts.

The best of five series now moves to the Smoggy City, where Tom Lasorda's crew hopes to complete their second consecutive playoff sweep and set up a probably World Series rematch with the Yankees.
