Boston University's 16-0 hockey team remained unscathed--but just barely--at RPI last night, as the Engineers nearly masterminded the ECAC upset of the year before falling, 8-7.

Tony Meagher banged home the game-winner for the Terriers at 18:10 of the third period to kill RPI's upset hopes.

Up and Up

RPI peppered the B.U. goal with 48 shots in the contest and led on three occasions--at 1-0, 5-4, and 7-6--but in the end the six-goal effort of the Terriers' Meagher-Mark Fidler-John Bethel line proved too strong for the Engineers.

Meagher, the most recent in a long line of B.U. hockey royalty, tallied a hat trick for the night. On the other end of the ice, Terrier goaltender Jim Craig turned in a commendable job in the nets with 41 saves in the face of a relentless RPI attack led by Ron Tomassoni.

RPI trailed, 3-2, at the end of the first period, but knotted the score at 5-all by the close of the second frame.

The home crowd went bananas midway through the final period when RPI jumped into a 7-6 lead, but Marc Hetnik evened it at seven before Meagher pumped in the spoiler.

RPI came up with three strong scoring opportunities in the closing seconds, but to no avail.

In other ECAC games, Clarkson handled St. Lawrence with a punishing 10-3 victory, while topsy-turvy Yale pulled off a major upset at home over third-ranked Boston College, 10-7. The Eagles had led in that contest, 7-6, before a four-goal Eli barrage put the game away.
