MADRID -- A bomb planted by a terrorist organization exploded yesterday on the first floor of the U.S. Cultural Center in Madrid hours before Vice President Walter F. Mondale was scheduled to arrive to meet with Spanish leaders.
The meetings took place as scheduled eight hours later and Mondale praised both King Juan Calros and Premier Adolfo Suarez for their roles in moving Spain closer to democracy.
The explosion which injured two guards was "a protest against the actions of Yankee imperialism," members of a leftist organization anonymously informed Spanish newspapers yesterday.
Police said yesterday the site of the bombing was not on Mondale's planned automobile route into the city and posed no direct threat to the vice president adding that officials have a good idea of the identity of those responsible for the act.
Elsewhere in Spain, no major incidents of violence occured in the aftermath of five days of violent demonstrations and a one-day general strike by Basque political parties.
