Trackmen Run Over Yale, Ready for Championships

"Yale only competes with Harvard in athletics," Samuel Elliot Morrison once said, but Yale could not even do that yesterday as the Harvard track team demolished Yale, 106 to 48, on a wet and cold day in New Haven.

Harvard easily routed Yale by almost shutting the Elis out in the field events and the middle and long distance races. Only in the sprints did the Bulldogs present any threat.

One of the meet's few surprises came in the long jump, where Hasan Kayali, jumping for the first time this year, set a personal record. He also won the triple jump later in the day.

Surprise, Surprise

Mark Meyer also came through with an unexpectedly strong performance in the three mile, turning in a personal best of 14:17.

Following, these performances Joe Pellegrini won the discus throw with a 169-ft. heave, relatively poor compared to his record setting toss of 174 ft. last Saturday, but it was enough to capture the event.

Geoff Styles then captured the pole vault, and Harvard swept the hammer throw.

Tri-captain Jeff Campbell outclassed the field in the mile, winning easily, and later he finished second to Harvard's John Chafee in the 880-yd. run.

Victory March

The sprint relay team joined the victory parade, continuing its winning ways under the coaching and cajoling of injured tri-captain Todd Hooks, still recuperating from a strained ankle.

The trackmen were not only trying to defeat Yale, but to win places on the combined Harvard-Yale team that will face an Oxford-Cambridge contingent in June. The first two finishers in each event make the team.

About two-thirds of the team will be from Harvard and one-third from Yale, Coach Bill McCurdy said yesterday. The meet is held every two years with the site alternating between England and the U.S.

Bow Wow Wow

"We successfully chased a bulldog around a soggy field," McCurdy said, but, more than anything else, the meet was a warmup for the Greater Boston Championship (GBC) this weekend, he added.

The major competition Harvard faces at this Sunday's GBC will be Northeastern, the only team to beat Harvard this season.
