Class Shows 'Dream' Art At Carpenter

The students and instructor of an advanced course in painting are exhibiting a sculpture in the lobby of the Carpenter Center, which they say portrays the "act of dreaming."

The sculpture is unique because it is not "static and dead" like traditional sculpture, Paul Rotterdam, senior lecturer in Visual Studies and teacher of Visual and Environmental Studies 20b, "Fundamentals of Painting," said.

The exhibit shows how sculpture created from very simple materials can portray complex ideas, he said, adding that the large sculpture cost only $5.

People reacted in a variety of ways to the sculpture yesterday. Although viewers said the sculpture puzzled them, they all thought it was "interesting."
