Radcliffe Laxwomen Unleash on Terriers, 14-1

Season Record Stands at 2-1

A year ago the score read Boston University 5, Radcliffe 4, the final record stood at one up, ten down, and the Red Sox swooned early. But that was last year.

Yesterday afternoon, in weather that was ten degrees short of fantastic, the Radcliffe lacrosse team rewrote things to the tune of 14-1 over the same Terriers, and in so doing doubled last spring's victory output. And the Red Sox? Well, two out of three isn't bad.

The game was fairly even until the opening face-off, at which time the lax-women let it be known that much like all of their Radcliffe sporting brethren this year, things are different this time around.

The Terriers did manage to sneak in a goal before the five-minute mark, but after that, the only place into which they could sneak was the bus back across the Charles.

With Carrie "nine-goals-in-three-games" Minot, Wistie "long for Anne" Oppenlander and Sue Abkowitz pitching in with three scores apiece, Radcliffe jumped to an 8-1 halftime advantage and coasted home with an easy triumph.

Minot, Oppenlander, Captain Anne Johnson and Marcia Goldberg did the first-half damage, with the former two connecting for the hat trick before it was time to peel the oranges.

Given this edge, Coach Debi Field opted for the "one play, we all play" strategy, emptying the Radcliffe bench but producing an additional six scores just the same.

Johnson clicked for her second in this half, Rachel Gaffney and Betsy McIntyre added one apiece, while Sue Abkowitz with dinner approaching and Boston University groping, tallied an insulting hat trick to account for the final margin.

'Just Terrible'

"They were just terrible," Minot said last night, uttering an assessment which in past years has usually been reserved for Radcliffe.

The laxwomen will have another chance to measure their improvement tomorrow morning against Brown on Soldiers Field. The Bruins triumphed by a 6-4 margin a year ago, but, again, that was last year.
