Washington would have been proud, but for the Harvard polo team it was just another futile attempt at victory as Valley Forge Military Academy charged through the Crimson horsemen, 19-2, Sunday in Pennsylvania.
Valley Forge outrode and outshot Harvard throughout the contest. "This was easily the most difficult match of the season so far," co-captain Bobo Tanner said yesterday.
The troops forged out to a 3-0 lead after the first chukker. Both squads spent equal time in front of the other's goal but Valley Forge successfully converted its opportunities into scores.
Harvard scored off the second chukker throw-in to ignite one of the day's few sparks of hope. Bill Griffen poked the ball up to Tanner who knocked it in from 25 yards out.
Valley Forge quickly extinguished the spark by tallying ten consecutive goals to make the score 13-1 after the third chukker.
Nina, Pinta...
Guiseppe Santa Maria dismantled the Crimson single-handedly throughout the middle chukkers, scoring seven goals. "He's the best player we've seen so far," Tanner said of the star from Bagota, Dominican Republic. "He's elusive, hard to keep up with and hard to hook," Tanner added.
Defenseless
The high point of the Crimson's afternoon came on Griffen's perfectly executed foul shot in the fourth chukker. As Griffen's shot plunged into the goal, the announcer blared over the loud-speaker, "and that's the way it's supposed to be done." Valley Forge responded with six more goals before the contest mercifully ended.
