With freshman Liz Kelly kicking in a hat trick, the Harvard women's swim team powered its way to a 73-56 win over Boston University Saturday morning at the IAB.

Kelly, a powerful freestyler out of Philadelphia, where she trained with the Vesper Boat Club, stroked her way to wins in the 100-, 500-, and 1,000-yd. freestyle events, setting two new team records in the 1,000- and 500-yd. swims. In the marathon 1,000, Kelly smashed Maura Costin's old record of 11:10.5 as she turned in a 10:57.25. Kelly's 5:23.83 clocking in the 500 edged Laurie Downey's old record of 5:24.93.

Junior Downey also enjoyed a doublewin day, taking the 100-yd. backstroke (1:06.81) and 200-yd. Individual Medley (2:23.80) races, both by considerable margins.

Versatile sophomore Costin also had a fine day in the pool, battling the back and neck muscle injuries that have plagued her since the middle of last season. She finished with three important second-places in the 1000-yd. free, the 100-yd. breaststroke, and the 200-yd. I.M., as well as turning in a 57.8, 100-yd. split in the 400-yd. free relay.

In that relay, the team of freshman Sherry Lubbers, Costin, Kelly, and Jane Fayer (Fayer is swimming with a splint on her broken toe) set a new team record with a time of 3:51.23, breaking last year's record of 3:53.14.however, the time was not quite good enough, as B.U. edged Coach Stephanie Walsh's women in that final event of the meet by 0.2 seconds.

With B.U.'s two divers suffering from sprained ankles, Harvard went into the meet with a 16-0 advantage, as the Harvard diving trio of Peri Ozkum, Emily Rothrock, and co-captain Leslie Landefeld took uncontested 8-0 sweeps in the one-meter required and optional events.

The meet remained close through the first seven events, with B.U. taking a 7-0 advantage after a win in the opening 400-yd. Medley Relay. But in the event it did not win, the Harvard team picked up the vital seconds and thirds that eluded it all last year, and stayed close until after the required diving. Then a string of four Harvard wins, including a one-two-three sweep in the 200-yd. backstroke, ran the Crimson women's point total to 68, topping the magic number 67 needed to insure the win.

The victory evened the women's record at 1-1 for the year.
