Members of "the b.u. exposure," a Boston University (B.U.) student newspaper, said yesterday that the B.U. administration is violating the First Amendment rights of the paper in a dispute with "the exposure" over funding and editorial control.
The university will not fund the paper unless Howard Zinn, faculty advisor to "the exposure," pledges to examine each issue of the paper before publication and edit libelous statements, Gary S. Abrams, an "exposure" staff member, said yesterday.
Zinn, who is a professor of Political Science at B.U., said yesterday that Johan A. Madson, dean of student life at B.U., informed "the exposure" of the administration's position at a meeting last Wednesday. The "exposure"s "freedom of expression would be violated if I took the pledge," Zinn said.
Madson said yesterday that the administration's request does not violate the First Amendment, adding that "the exposure" could not find a court decision to support its contention.
